Who Needs Sunspots?

When the solar maximum is upon us, all summer long we enjoy juicy DX bands, with the 10 and 15 meter bands just dripping with exotic DX stations all day. DXCC is easy pickings if you can be heard through the pile-ups.

But when Old Man Winter bares his teeth, and the sunspot count is nil… Hold your horses! DX can still be worked. The secret is to remember the word“opposite”.

The opposite of “high sunspot count, summer, day, higher frequencies” is “low sunspot count, winter, night, lower frequencies.” So DX should be possible these January nights on 80 and 40 and even 160 meters.
